The Dark Knight Rises: Rotten Tomatoes shuts down comments

Rotten Tomatoes is a review site where critics post their reviews on films and discuss their opinions with readers and reviewers alike. All was well as the overly positive The Dark Knight Rises reviews trickled in. Until negative reviews started to appear. I don’t know if any of you have gotten into a heated debate with a Dark Knight fan, but let me tell you they get personal real quick.
Rotten Tomatoes regulates the comments on posts so as to not have an insanely hostile environment. Then all hell broke lose! When it comes to The Dark Knight the task was clearly to daunting for the staff to upkeep. One man was threatened by Dark Knight trolls and thus lead to the shutting down of the commenting system all together.
“The job of policing the comments became more than my staff could handle for that film, so we stopped the comments altogether,”
- EIC Matt Atchity of Rotten Tomatoes
This was the first time in the sites history that it had to shut down their commenting system. The event came as a shock to the system. Rotten Tomatoes may be moving back to Facebook system to avoid the anonymity the current system offers.
“You’ll have to stand by your comments… So you’ll still be able to argue about a movie you haven’t seen, but people will know it was you.”
