Don’t Have A Facebook Page? Well Then You’re Probably a Psychopath

Do any of you have that one friend who is trying to be a die hard hipster/non conformist by dodging out on the whole cultural phenomena that is Facebook? Well it looks like your friend may be among the ranks of deviants such as James Holmes & Anders Behring Breivik (Norwegian massacre shooter) who both didn’t have a Facebook page. Psychologists see Facebook activity as a reflections of a healthy social life.

The Internet has become a natural part of life,” psychologist Christopher Moeller told Germany’s Der Taggspiegel. It’s possible that you get feelings of positive feedback through online friends. [Translated from German]

Its not too hard to see how psychologists deduct that abstaining from social networks such can be a tell tale sign of a troubled individual. Today’s generation uses Facebook to interact with their friends and peers. Choosing not to be a part of it is no different from that kid in high-school who chooses  to not interact with anyone. I had a conversation with a friend of mine who agreed that in his experience people he has known in his personal life were usually up to no good or had something to hide.

So while some may think it’s appalling  to make such a claim simply from someone’s absence from social media, places hiring agree that it is a big red flag in the interview process. It would be like readings someone’s resume and noticing that they have no social skills or experience working with people. Seclusion leads to madness, also one of the reasons it is used as punishment in everything from interrogations to imprisonment.

The only experience i’ve had with someone who didn’t have a Facebook account was an old friend. To me it was clearly because he had a general dislike for people in general among their deep rooted trust issues. It was a sort of denying reality. When ever his emotional state was compromised  it would directly result in his deletion of Facebook.

I would love to hear some of your experiences I don’t necessarily think this issue is black and white but most of what has been shared with me and most of my own observations seem to correlate with what psychological studies have found. So how about all of you tell me your experiences with those who remove themselves from the social network that binds us all. Do you think there’s solid evidence to back the claim of absentees being not so sane? Voice your opinion in the comments and feel free to speak for or against these claims and studies. One thing’s for sure and that is that I will be a little more observant of those who choose to opt out from online social interaction.
